"What's classic is modern," Michelle Smith proclaimed before her Fall show. Some of the city-chic ensembles in crisp red, navy, and green were quite strong—but unfortunately, Smith's simple declarative message was muddled by distracting styling and a too-long lineup.Strengths included cropped peacoats in double-faced wool and several ladylike wool jacket-and-miniskirt pairings, particularly the one in white with red and blue checks. Smith—who also cited a trio of Godard films as inspiration—clearly counts sixties French fashion under the rubric of "what's classic."
These cute, retro silhouettes were undermined by the addition of acid pink tights, laser-cut berets, and busy plaid pumps. Plenty of standout separates hit the Milly runway today, but it was difficult to appreciate the simplicity of the clothes with everything else that was going on.
