Jean-Charles de Castelbajac hit upon the season's surrealism undercurrent with a show he dubbed "Woman/Ray" For all the kids out there reading this, that's a play on Man Ray. Come to think of it, putting the artist's famous Glass Tears and Le Violon d'Ingres photographs on dresses might be a pretty efficient way to practice art history these days. Get Katy Perry, who was sitting in the front row, to sport one and it could very well go viral.What the audience really responded to was a black leather bandeau shaped like a pair of hands grasping its model's breasts. But as for what Perry might personally choose, our money is on the strapless black dress with the hand-painted skull, the one wearing the blue crystal necklace that matched her cerulean wig.
Balancing out the Schiaparelli and Man Ray moments was more straightforward sportswear: fringed, blanket-plaid jackets, pants, and dresses; a khaki trench; an oversize herringbone suit. If de Castelbajac wants to differentiate this sophisticated stuff from his lower-priced JC/DC line, he shouldn't have let the 101 Dalmatians out of the showroom.
