If there's one thing as inevitable as death and taxes, it's this: The fashion eye will eventually tire of one look, dismiss it, and flock to the very opposite. Today, after Philosophy's intimate show, Alberta Ferretti explained that she'd had enough of the mixed-up, magpie approach. "It became obvious," said Ferretti. "I think girls, like Kate Middleton, they want a change. They want to surprise."Ferretti's alternative proposal today was all match, zero mix. Each model came out in an Easter egg-hued coat that she then removed to reveal a perfectly coordinated dress underneath. The look was precise and very proper—even if the palette was bit at odds with the season.
Under neatly tailored A-line princess coats were thigh-skimming baby dolls, which came in an oversize plaid or wallpaper-printed wool, in delicate lace-trimmed satin, or sweetly appliquéd with floral lace. Even more saccharine than those were crocheted mohair skater dresses with stiff underskirts.
But it was a sweet little retro vision, rounded out by the groovy, lilting tune "Parole Parole" sung by the sixties Italian pop star Mina Mazzini and actor Alberto Lupo. Was it persuasive enough to get modern girls like the future Princess Catherine to renounce their mixed-up ways? Time will tell.
