"When I started Gryphon
, I was really passionate about offering go-to coats and jackets that instantly update a look but are still functional," Aimee Cho said at a preview of her new collection. The designer has always had a clear point of view when it comes to approachable outerwear, and she renewed her focus here on such signatures as her best-selling cotton-metal trenches. This time around, they were tricked out with patch-worked fox-fur collars or scrap-metal embellishment at the shoulders. The most covetable piece was a weather-resistant, heavy twill trench with a removable leather harness that was reportedly inspired by the armor on Game of Thrones
. It had more dress-up potential than the cropped canvas numbers and fleecy puffers, which would work well on weekends but were too casual for, say, making an impression during fashion week—particularly when shown as they were with wrinkled khaki overalls, a New York Yankees baseball cap, or slip-on sneakers. A vibrant camouflage Pendleton-esque varsity jacket, on the other hand, brought something more compelling to the table while retaining that refined nonchalance Gryphon is known for.
