Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear

It's super to see a young designer go all out with a fashion video, and Joy Cioci really rose to the occasion this season. The up-and-comer, who is a self-professed movie fanatic, put together an epic three-and-a-half-minute short, loosely based on the 1986 fantasy flick Labyrinth (starring David Bowie), in which she aimed to evoke a world where "everything seems possible and nothing is as it seems." She had model pal Louise Donegan play the protagonist who quests for a crystal ball that transports her to different locations (almost like different levels in a game), and brought in Grammy Award-winning producer Mike Dean to create an original track. The cinematic result gave Cioci's ultrafeminine ruffled georgette halter gowns and lace party dresses a dark edge. Exotic furs have emerged as a particular strong suit for the designer, and standout pieces here included a paneled fox jacket with a flattering nipped-in waist, as well as a leather-trimmed wool topcoat with yeti-like "speckled goat" sleeves. While a few looks could've stood to lose some of their frills or feathers, overall, the lineup successfully merged romance with a dash of classic cool.
