D&G

MILAN, July 1, 2005
By Tim Blanks
It's a wonder how Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana constantly manage to transmogrify the show tent attached to their Milanese headquarters. For their signature presentation this season, it was all mirrors and chandeliers. Two days later, the audience arriving for the D&G show encountered a swath of fresh green grass scattered with flowers in bloom. According to Domenico, he and Stefano were imagining "a pizza party on Ibiza," with boys lounging around watching the sunset at Café del Mar.

The Ibiza connection seemed a little tenuous, however, given the show's high grunge factor. Plaid shirts were knotted round waists, blousons and a sweatshirt looked suitably frayed, baggy shorts were attached over jeans in a doubled-up trompe effect, waistbands drooped to bumster level to reveal Liberty-print boxers. Several shirts came in the same kind of florals, others were shot with gold thread, yielding a flash of glam grunge. The footwear, on the other hand, looked like a concession to a more easygoing summer vibe: flip-flops would never have made it in a Seattle mosh pit.
