Imagine you're an executive woman searching the London catwalks for clothes that will dress you efficiently for the many demands of your day, from school run to business meeting. Jaeger London ought to be one of your first ports of call. Its history positions it as a label that really understands such a woman's lifestyle, but the brand's current design director, Stuart Stockdale, who joined just under a year ago, hasn't yet fully grasped the heritage. At least that's one explanation for a collection that seemed dogged by a singular lack of coordination. Suede and print dresses looked perfectly OK, but they were surrounded by some of the strangest pants of the season: loony, flaring banana pants and dhotis that were somehow hobbled round the hem. Jumpsuits and haremlike silk trousers tied at the ankle evoked disco dressing in the late seventies, maybe on the same Mediterranean island where the skimpy knits would have been wrapped around bikinis. Not denying the Jaeger woman a bit of adventure, but she'd probably have preferred a well-tailored jacket. There was scarcely a one. And the looming challenge is that there are plenty of other high-street brands that are effectively filling that particular gap.
