Organic by John Patrick

NEW YORK, September 10, 2009
By Romney Leader
John Patrick boiled down his feelings on Organic Spring 2010 as follows: "Art for art's sake? Well, this is fashion for fashion's sake." In spite of a setting—the 124-year-old Keens Steakhouse—that threatened to overshadow the delicate wares on display, Patrick's steadfast commitment to the heritage of American sportswear yielded some solid looks, including a pretty forties-inspired floral frock with a nipped waist and a menswear-style shirt in nude chiffon paired with pleated silk pants. Much of the fabric had been washed, creating a lightness that had been missing from past seasons. These more sophisticated, refined silhouettes, coupled with the talent on hand (Odile Gilbert and Gucci Westman were backstage on hair and makeup duty, while pal Shalom Harlow acted as guest bartender), suggest the designer is honing his vision and stepping up his game. A good thing, since John Patrick's unique, eco-focused approach stands out in an overly crowded fashion-week calendar.
