As with their women's line, Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos were thinking juxtaposition when they designed this season's menswear. A Classic vs. Modern Parody, they titled both collections. Hence, a T-shirt with Jacques-Louis David's image of Napoleon on his steed, pasted over with a yellow smiley face.

That was more or less the extent of the parody, though. The affordable suiting that's a cornerstone of S&H's business came here in an expanded range of shades. The varsity jacket that debuted last season was back, now with perforated leather sleeves. And a classic belted trench reinforced what these guys do best: standards, lightly tweaked, eminently wearable, and reasonably priced. That may not be a grand Napoleonic strategy, but it does sound like a recipe for success. Who's laughing now?
