"I don't even know what a trend is anymore," Organic's John Patrick said with pronounced distaste for the T word. "I think trends have trended out."

Appropriately, his Spring collection bloomed from a core of white shirting and khaki that cross-pollinated safari chic with venerable American staples—the easy-breezy, wholly independent spirit of Lauren Hutton. At first glance it read basic. You've certainly seen many of these clothes before, from the wide-legged cotton jeans to the heather gray sweatshirt to the hooded anorak. Amid the neutrals, jewel-hued vintage-tie silks cut into short shorts and loose pants were the shiny bits that caught your eye. Patrick also worked them into his new capsule collection of bags, which debuted here.

But what ultimately raises this line above the basic is the designer's eye for details of cut. That's why his white windowpane cotton peasant dress will be the one every girl wants to wear during next summer's dog days. Another incentive, of course, is Organic's eco ethos, which—for those who care—stands apart by genuinely walking the walk.

The designer pronounced business happily stable, and that means he's looking ahead. "I want a bigger stage," Patrick said. "I'd love to redo Gap!" Consider this a clever audition.
