St. John

The latest St. John collection is a testament to just how versatile knitwear can be. At the Spring presentation today, the ever stylish model turned singer Karen Elson told creative director George Sharp that the long, clingy knit gown that Caroline Winberg was wearing was "the sexiest dress I've ever seen, even though it doesn't show an inch of skin." The dress was cut from a stretchy fabric with pearlized sequins flattened down for a slight sheen. Winberg's enviable bone structure and sample size figure clearly made the total look that much better, but one could also imagine Kate Winslet, the label's current spokeswoman, working the red carpet to devastatingly voluptuous effect in the same curve-hugging look.

There were also practical knits, like blazers that wear like cardigans, as well as a chunky asymmetrical sweater, modeled by Siri Tollerød, that was paired with a pooling maxi skirt. For many designers, Spring is the season for showing bright colors. But Sharp stayed away from the brights here, opting instead for a neutral palette of blush, steel gray, and white. While this wasn't the trendy, look-at-me kind of clothing that will get you noticed by street-style photographers, the subtly sophisticated St. John customer already has enough confidence in her dress sense without getting her picture taken.
