Spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear
October 08, 2013 New York
Feminine, easy-to-wear clothes are what Wren's Melissa Coker does best, and she's been bringing them to life for the past several years with quirky, creative videos made in collaboration with starlets who embody the free-spirited essence of the contemporary Los Angeles-based label. This season, the designer worked with director Kava Gorna, who filmed Annabelle Dexter-Jones and Hailey Gates spending a lazy morning together recovering from a hangover. After waking up in their Wren frocks from the evening before, the It girls lounge around in skivvies and pullovers while enjoying breakfast in bed, recapping their late-night adventures, reading a book to each other, fielding phone calls from new suitors, and preparing for the next day before heading out all over again. It was a scenario we can all relate to, just as the latest Wren lineup was full of straightforward, everyday separates to take you from grabbing orange juice at the corner convenience store to a weekend shopping excursion to a backyard dinner party. While breezing through racks of cute striped shifts, relaxed ikat-print drawstring trousers, flippy A-line skirts, and lace T-shirts, Coker explained she was going for a nineties vibe for Spring. "Think Brenda Walsh meets Contempo Casuals," she said. That decade got a lot of play on the runways this season, and the 90210-esque looks here, including a zipped-up, ribbed-jersey crop top and a short floral silk baby-doll dress, felt particularly of-the-moment.
