Uma Thurman

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association embraced talents both time-tested and new this year, and the fashions on the Golden Globes red carpet were similarly eclectic. Natalie Portman channeled a latter-day flapper in a floaty Chloé dress with hip-slung sequin belt and double-strand necklace, while Anjelica Huston opted for understatement in a simple Calvin Klein column.

The fifties were represented by Renée Zellweger in Carolina Herrera's strapless cocktail dress and by Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria in an Oscar de la Renta bustier number. Going further back in time—all the way to the Grecian era—were Uma Thurman in draped Christian Dior and Teri Hatcher who wore custom-made Donna Karan. A few actresses went for eye-popping color: Cate Blanchett glowed in lilac Jean Paul Gaultier and Jennifer Garner dazzled in red Valentino couture. But the winners—Annette Bening in Dolce & Gabbana and Glenn Close in vintage Geoffrey Beene—wore can't-go-wrong black.
