Gwyneth Paltrow

Sarah Jessica Parker

There's been talk about the lack of strong roles for women in film this awards season, but there was no shortage of memorable dresses on the Golden Globes red carpet. The Constant Gardener's Rachel Weisz, five months pregnant, stood out from the pack in a citrine custom-made Donna Karan gown, as did her fellow winner Reese Witherspoon, who wore a vintage, haute couture cocktail number by Chanel (which also dressed Natalie Portman, Emily Mortimer, and Vanessa Paradis).

Black and white were the evening's popular favorites. In the first camp were Sarah Jessica Parker in tiered lace by Olivier Theyskens for Rochas, Mandy Moore in Ralph Lauren, and Renée Zellweger in her trusty Carolina Herrera—Mr. Blackwell be damned. Keira Knightley, Maria Bello, and an expecting Gwyneth Paltrow went the pale route, wearing Valentino, Elie Saab, and Balenciaga, respectively. Meanwhile, a trio of stars—Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, and Geena Davis—sported "Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press Association" red, though only TV's commander in chief took home the Globe.
