There is never any shortage of opinions to be heard during New York fashion week, but no one could deny that, this time around,
Naomi Campbell had the last word. The über networker closed out the week by rallying a spectacular group of models, celebrities, and industry heavyweights to mount the Fashion for Relief runway show, a benefit to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Held at the Bryant Park tents, the event marked the first time that the general public had been allowed to witness the mysterious goings-on that take place inside. For a priceregular tickets cost $100; V.I.P. seats went for $1,000audience members got to experience an authentic 90-minute wait (!), followed by a 45-minute show featuring runway legends Janice Dickinson, Carmen Dell'Orefice, and Pat Cleveland (who was still dancing on the catwalk when the lights went off), as well as more-recently minted veterans like Patricia Velasquez, Angie Everhart, and Veronica Webb. Kelly Osbourne and Nicole Richie also strutted their stuff, blowing past a front row that included Foxy Brown, Diddy, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale (both fresh from the unveiling of L.A.M.B.'s spring threads earlier in the evening), Zac Posen, Margherita Missoni, and Iman.
All the clothing was donated (by an impressively wide range of designers), and will be auctioned off on Yahoo, starting Thursday, September 22. A T-shirt created for the cause by Ralph Lauren, meanwhile, is available for $35 at Polo.com.
"I think everybody feels happy," said Campbell following the show. An exuberant Webb elaborated on how she planned to further contribute to the cause: "We're buying very heavily from our local fishermen and helping them out with supplies that they need for their boats," said the Florida-based model. "I'm also planning to do a major tour of all of the Gulf states when everything gets better, because I think one of the best things that we can do once they rebuild is go down there and spend some money."
