With the Golden Globes canceled and the fate of the Oscars still undecided as the Writers Guild strike enters its fourth month, the dress codepaillettes or pantsuits?at the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was anybody's guess. That played out on the red carpet. Best Supporting Actor winner
Javier Bardem sported an open-collar shirt with his Prada suit.
Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling, both of whom, like
Viggo Mortensen and
James Gandolfini, worked facial hair worthy of Williamsburg hipsters, played it just as casual, going tieless underneath their vests.
Their female counterparts were a different story. A few stars, including
Juno's
Ellen Page,
Rebecca Romijn, and
Michelle Pfeiffer chose cocktail dresses, but many more went full-lengthand full-on glam. Double nominee
Cate Blanchett bypassed her standby Giorgio Armani in favor of a strapless, embroidered Balenciaga gown that showcased her six-months-pregnant form.
Angelina Jolie's billowy chiffon fueled speculation about her own pregnancy. Others, like
Kyra Sedgwick in L'Wren Scott,
Marion Cotillard and
Ellen Pompeo, both in Nina Ricci, and
Kate Beckinsale in Luisa Beccaria, donned more formfitting bustier styles.
Tilda Swinton
best captured the mood of the evening: With her flame-red hair slicked back, she wore a sleek steel-gray blazer over her drapey goddess gown.
