L.A. Confidential

An Exclusive Round of Fêtes on the West Coast

You can't get much more Hollywood-fabulous than lunch at Robert Evans' house in Beverly Hills. Invite some synchronized swimmers to perform in the pool and…well, what's better than fabulous? The occasion: the launch of a new capsule line of sunglasses inspired and designed by Evans for Oliver Peoples. "I've worn sunglasses for ages," said the producer, who spent most of the afternoon in his bedroom, receiving guests while flipping through an issue of Variety. "They give an air of mystery—I know what you're thinking, but you don't know what I'm thinking." Getting the frames for the new collection just right required considerable patience, however: "It took less time to make The Godfather."

"I was at Robert Evans' house in the seventies!" Rene Russo said a few hours later, at a cocktail party for the brands Kara Ross, J. Mendel, Ebel, and Concord in a Sunset Tower penthouse. "I bet it looks exactly the same." (Somehow, Russo, who turned 54 this week, does too.) The whole scene was a love fest of frocks, jewelry, and Champagne: "I'm such a fan," Kerry Washington told Gilles Mendel. "No, I'm such a fan," Mendel told Washington. "I'm such a fan," Michelle Monaghan told Washington. And so it went.

Monaghan and Angie Harmon did a quick change into Dior for dinner at the Chateau Marmont in honor of Dior Beauty. Harmon playfully re-enacted a scene from Pretty Woman with a jewelry box full of Dior makeup. Rose McGowan, meanwhile, was relieved to skip the Oscar weekend craziness with a trip to Austin the next day with fiancé Robert Rodriguez. "You know, sometimes I just tell people I'm a botanist," the actress admitted.

Some stars, however, never seem to tire of the glitz and glamour that their jobs entail. Down the block at the Beverly Hills Hotel, A-listers such as Demi Moore, Kate Hudson, and Charlize Theron were all gussied up in their red-carpet finest for—yes, that's right—a dominoes tournament. De Grisogono hosted the night, with proceeds going to that charity of the moment, the Art of Elysium.
