With Jimmy Fallon
and The Edge
taking home honors for their hunger-relief efforts, the Food Bank's Can-Do dinner at Pier Sixty on Monday night attracted an A-list crowd that included rockers Michael Stipe, Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Patti Smith. Upon receiving his award, Fallon performed Car Wash for Peace, a ditty urging people to "put down those guns and pick up sponges." After the rousing performance, the funnyman opined on what fueled him. "It has to be Shake Shack burgers," he said, referring to the Madison Square Park food stand. "But I always check on their Webcam first to see if there's a line." Bill Clinton, who presented The Edge with his prize, proved to be a bit more philosophical. "I've had a really good life so far," said the former president. "So that's what sustains me." Guests raised over half a million dollars at the post-dinner auction, which was followed by a special treat in the form of Elvis Costello performing Where the Streets Have No Name. "Elvis blew me away," said The Edge. "Between him and Bill Clinton, it's going to take years for this evening to sink in."
Nearby at Milk Gallery, Mary Alice Stephenson, Amy Sacco, and Simon de Pury hosted the eighth annual Free Arts benefit. Power couple Liev Schreiber and (a very pregnant) Naomi Watts took off after their photo op, but Donna Karan, Thakoon Panichgul, Gilles Mendel, and Jacquetta Wheeler stayed to scope out prints by Chuck Close, Jeremy Blake, and Catherine Opie. Liv Tylerwho shared co-host billing with Scarlett Johansson, a no-showarrived late, but did her part to help generate $650,000 for the charity, bidding on a Hope Atherton painting.
Uptown at the Calvin Klein boutique, Francisco Costa threw a kickoff party for Safe Horizon's Champion Awards Luncheon on May 10. "It's our third year doing this in the store, and it's great," said the designer, who took the opportunity to offer an exclusive preview of the Fall 2007 collection. Dressed in one of Costa's fitted gray columns, Claire Danes said, "I'm so relieved to see the sun. But it has encouraged way too much shoe shopping: Jeffrey, Chanel, Costume National, and Barneys." Danes' Evening co-star and beau, actor Hugh Dancy, had a different reason to appreciate spring. "Everybody goes wild," he said. "It's like a citywide competition to wear as little as possible, which is always good."
