The party to celebrate
Justin Giunta's CFDA nomination at the Phillips de Pury gallery drew a fashionable crowd despite Wednesday night's stormy weather. Thakoon Panichgul, who's also up for a Swarovski Award this year, was there, along with last year's winner
Doo-Ri Chung and a number of editors and publicists like
Meredith Melling Burke,
Horacio Silva, and
Bonnie Morrison. The Subversive Jewelry designer's collage-like piecesmade from found objects and junk-store treasureswere arrayed in cases alongside the work of Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. When asked how it felt to be in the company of such modern-art greats, Giunta responded with brio. "It's exactly how I wanted it," he said. "To prove that there's no difference between one and the other." Then he was pulled away by an avid fan, who said, "If I could, I'd buy your bracelet right out of the case." Giunta's reply: "If I let people do that, I wouldn't have a show."
