At the party Style.com hosted for our new book, Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion, at Skylight Studios on Tuesday night, early talk centered on one person. "Is Polly here?" wondered a guest. "She better be, she's the star attraction," said another. Polly, of course, is Polly Mellen, the legendary silver-bobbed stylist famous for her collaborations with Richard Avedon and Helmut Newtonand one of 16 top tastemakers whose work is showcased in the photo-filled publication. Mellen was indeed on hand, along with her peers, as some of their most memorable images played on giant monitors that guests operated, Minority Report-style, with a swish of their palms.
"It's like an interactive art gallery," said Zac Posen, who palled around with Francisco Costa for a good portion of the evening. "I spent the last week getting used to my iPhone, so this is good practice." Mellen, meanwhile, was quick to praise her fellow stylists. "Everything stands out," she said, in between greeting friends and admirers like Vogue's Anna Wintour, Anna Sui, and Allure's Linda Wells. "They're all magicians."
And they all had their fans. Behati Prinsloo, part of a model contingent that included Anja Rubik, Julia Stegner, and Suvi Koponen, raved about Camilla Nickerson. "She's one of my faves," said Prinsloo. "I love the way she styles me like I normally dresscasual, boyish, but still cute." Paul Cavaco said, "No one thinks styling is a real job, but it is. Not one person profiled in the book isn't a workhorse." He should knowhe's in it. And when the photographers were done with a late-arriving Gwen Stefani, she made a beeline for Andrea Lieberman, with whom she works on her L.A.M.B. collection. Said the pop star: "Andrea is a creativity sandwich between two slices of insanity."
