"I've always wanted an excuse to carry a Judith Leiber bag," said Tom Ford, as he accepted the accessory-brand-launch trophy—a custom-made crystal-encrusted Leiber minaudière—at the Accessories Council Excellence Awards at Cipriani on Monday night.
Ford and his new clutch were perfectly in tune with the bling-tastic crowd, which included Naomi Watts and honorees Jennifer Lopez, Rachel Zoe, Michael Kors, and Silvia Venturini Fendi. It was Suzy Menkes, however, who led the glittering set with her gold-topped cane. "I broke my toe, but I'm not telling anybody," declared the International Herald Tribune fashion editor, who was recognized for her journalism. "Let them think that my cane is part of the new look!"
The evening's star honoree, Lopez, picked up the ACE award for her JLo and Sweetface lines. Her favorite bauble? "Of course, it's the blue diamond ring that my genius husband picked out for me," she said. Zac Posen, meanwhile, waxed nostalgic. "I wore a muff to high school every day in the winter," said Posen. "But there are certain things you have to stop doing by the time you're 21. These days, a good umbrella works for me."
In L.A., Liz Goldwyn celebrated the release of Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens, a book version of the vintage enthusiast's HBO documentary by the same name. "I've been working on the subject for 10 years, and I think it's just part of the feminine consciousness right now, this idea of getting back in touch with our sexuality," said Goldwyn, who was clad in a Sophia Kokosalaki custom-made gold frock with limited-edition Dior perfume-bottle heels.
She wasn't the only one channeling retro glamour. "Liz made me dress up tonight," said Jena Malone, twirling in her Sonia Rykiel dress. "She's the most glamorous historian you've ever seen." Holding court with YSL's Stefano Pilati, Chloë Sevigny added, "I thought this vintage black-lace Anne Klein was very burlesque." Perhaps, but not quite so burlesque as Betty "Ball of Fire" Rowland, who demonstrated a few of her old moves, much to the delight of China Chow, Cameron Silver, Amanda Scheer-Demme, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton.
