On Tuesday night, a fashionable set that included Pat McGrath, Karen Elson, Isaac Mizrahi, and a dozen or so Vogue editors turned up at Marc Jacobs' Bleecker Street boutique to toast Grace Coddington. The magazine's creative director and her partner, Didier Malige, have put together a new book, The Catwalk Cats, so it was no surprise that their felines were a major topic of conversation. "She's troublesome because she doesn't like to ride in the car, and we go to Long Island almost every weekend," said Coddington about her newest kitten, Pumpkin. "But I'm working it out with the pet psychic mentioned in the book."
As cocktail hour wound down, Jacobs popped into the store hand in hand with his on-again boyfriend, Jason Preston. The duo sported matching mohawks, tight T-shirts, and baggy pants exposing their Calvin Klein boxer briefs. "You look " stylist Joe McKenna began. "Twenty-five?" interjected Jacobs, adding, "It was time for a change." After shelling out for a couple of the T-shirts and books on sale (the proceeds of which benefited City Critters), Jacobs joined Vogue's Anna Wintour, Steven Klein, and the rest of the group for a private dinner at Sant Ambroeus. "Grace and I get together, and about 75 percent of the time is spent talking about her cats and my dogs," said the designer, showing off a tattoo of his beloved canines, Alfred and Daisy.
Uptown at the Guggenheim, contemporary art lovers such as Dennis Hopper, Amy Sacco, and Peter Som honored the six finalists of the biennial Hugo Boss Prize, now celebrating its tenth anniversary. "I'm not a fan of the Guggenheim," deadpanned Dustin Hoffman as he arrived. "All my life, I've hated it." His fellow guests, however, seemed right at home in their Frank Lloyd Wright-designed surroundings. "If you don't be quiet, you won't know who the winner is," said the museum's director, Lisa Dennison, as the ceremony began. But there was no shushing Damian Loeb. "I'm an artist, so I'm always nervous for artists at these events," he said. He needn't have worried for Tacita Dean. The British multimedia artist beat out Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla, John Bock, Damian Ortega, Aida Ruilova, and Tino Sehgal to take home the $50,000 award.
