Most office Christmas parties stick to the basic formula of open bar and cheese platters. But
Marc Jacobs, as we well know, does things a little differently. The annual holiday costume bash he hosts with business partner
Robert Duffy is always over-the-top, and this year's installment was more elaborate than ever. Eight hundred revelers, including
Benjamin Cho,
Dr. Lisa Airan,
Richie Rich, and
Kiera Chaplin, ascended to the Rainbow Room, where every inch of the space had been transformed in accordance with the evening's Arabian Nights theme. There was, of course, an open bar (actually, there were five). There were also a huge revolving dance floor, a phalanx of go-go dancers, whirling dervishes, dwarfs, fortune-tellers, a Cipriani-catered buffet dinner, various Persian-themed tableaux vivants, and a flying-carpet photo op (complete with a wind machine to lend believability).
According to Duffy, it all might have looked very different. "I wanted to do St. Petersburg at the time of the czars," he said. "But everybody said it would be too difficult." Instead, Duffy went on, "All the guys in the office wanted to get kind of naked, so I decided to go with Arabian Nights." Indeed, the ways in which partygoers (both male and female) managed to incorporate nudity into their ensembles was impressive. Sexy sultans, naughty genies, and even a thigh-high burka or two hit the dance floor. Meanwhile, stationed in the main ballroom was Jacobsworld-famous designer and arguably one of the most talented minds in the fashion industrydressed as a giant camel toe. "It's actually the most comfortable costume I've ever worn," he insisted of the elaborate, furry getup. As for the fact that he wasn't the only guest in the room to have hit on that particular joke? "Oh, I don't mind. I like to see everybody's interpretation of it. It's obviously a very popular theme."
