Olivier Theyskens Fans Line Up at the Boom Boom Room to Celebrate His First Theory Show
Inside the coat closet last night at the Boom Boom Room, there were plenty of swag bags with Marc Jacobs' logo on them, checked in by people who'd been at the designer's after-party at Pier Sixty earlier in the evening. But now the guests were here to celebrate Theory's Olivier Theyskens, who had, like Jacobs, made himself easy to love on Valentine's Day with a winning collection.
Actually, Kelly Osbourne had just come by to hang out. "I didn't even know this was a party," she admitted. But she introduced herself to Theyskens and declared herself a fan of the brand. "They're cut perfectly," Osbourne said of Theory's pants. Michael Stipe had kind words as well. "The show was incredible. I loved the sort of kimono fold that was happening behind the arms," he said. "I was really jealous that he didn't do menswear." And the music didn't disappoint, he added—no light compliment, coming from the R.E.M. front man. "It's usually very tinny and weird and too loud, but Olivier's was subtle and well chosen," Stipe decided.
In the back of the room, Theyskens was sipping a beer and chatting with Aimee Mullins about the instructions he'd given the models: "When a girl is happy and feeling she's beautiful, something happens. She understands she can look cool. So I was asking them to have an attitude that's cool, and with a loose way of walking—longer steps," he explained. Now that the show was over, Theyksens himself was feeling looser. All he needed, he explained, was the perfect Valentine's Day gift: "A good kiss."
