The Bemelmans Bunch
Debra Messing, Rene Russo, and More Toast Michael Kors
Michael Kors sent models out to a remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" at his runway show yesterday. The song choice couldn't have been more appropriate. On the 30th anniversary of his clothing line, Kors is soaking up more good vibes than ever. Bette Midler serenaded him with her ukulele after the show, and last night at Bemelmans, across Madison Avenue from the designer's first store, the love-in continued. Judy Collins sang "Send in the Clowns" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," eliciting fond sighs from the likes of Anjelica Huston, Rene Russo, Patti Hansen, and, of course, the man of the hour himself.
Debra Messing, who has known Kors since she wore a shirt of his in the first publicity shoot for Will & Grace, was another one of the notables that had sat front-row that morning. "It was glamorous and sexy, and yet the clothes looked as comfortable as pajamas," she concluded, and she flipped for the Michael Kors number in which Emma Roberts showed up. "You look spectacular in those cutouts!"
No matter which way Kors turned, someone wanted to kiss him. Karolina Kurkova and Isabeli Fontana (both of whom walked in the show) each took a cheek, and Carmen Kass planted one on him from behind, causing the designer to whirl around and exclaim, "I knew it was you! I know those lips!"
The two go way back, and during a pre-show fitting the night before, had shared a good cry. "I've never choked up before working on a collection," Kors insisted. Apparently, 30 is different. But not that different, Kors said. "I don't think I'm totally over the rainbow. I still feel juiced and excited. I still feel like a kid."
