The Dame Game
Mendes, Midler, and More at The Women Screening
Thursday night's Cinema Society screening of The Women, the new comedy with a dream-team cast of Hollywood actresses, was a celebration of the fairer sex and the designer clothes that make it fairer. Meg Ryan, whose character in the film struggles to launch her first collection, gave a shout-out to collaborator Narciso Rodriguez. "We didn't have any money to make this movie," she said. "He was cool. He sent the models, he sent the clothes." True to its name, the film (a remake of the 1939 classic) doesn't feature a single male actor. Cast member Bette Midler, for one, wasn't bothered. "We didn't even miss the guys. We didn't miss anybody!" she trilled. But the Divine Miss M couldn't resist snapping a few photos of herself with her old pal Mick Jagger (one of the film's producers) the moment he strolled into the room. Later, she pulled out her camera to show them off. "There he is!" she sang. "There's my boy!"
