Brothers From Another Mother
Ryan McGinley and Tilda Swinton Give Pringle a Party to Remember
Ryan McGinley and Tilda Swinton, the photographer and actress that the clothing company Pringle of Scotland tapped to shoot and star in its Spring 2010 campaign, appear to be extremely intimate friends: Between the hand-holding and the snuggling, they alternately call each other "twin sisters" and "brothers from another mother." So it was a bit shocking to learn, at a dinner in their honor Monday night at the Saatchi Gallery in London, that they had only met recently and only worked together once three weeks ago on the Pringle campaign and accompanying short film. "But I feel like we had always been psychically connected," Swinton explained.
The dinner followed a screening of their collaboration and a runway show of the line's Spring collection, which drew a smattering of London cool kids (Estelle, Olympia Scarry) and American heavyweights (John Waters, Anna Wintour). But all eyes were on the happy couple. The brief dialogue in the short film was taken from Robert Bresson's Notes on Cinematography, which McGinley again quoted to explain his new, unique relationship with Swinton. " 'Choose your models well so they lead you where you want to go,' " the photographer said in a speech at dinner. Then, looking at his co-conspirator, he said, "That's you and me, baby."
