London Goes Underground for the Serpentine Gallery's Annual Summer Party
This year's Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion was created by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Ai Weiwei, the Chinese dissident artist who was not permitted to leave Beijing for the Tuesday night opening. Inside the semi-underground steel and cork structure was a major exhibition of the work of Yoko Ono. Three generations of Jaggers showed up to take it in—Amba, Jade, and Bianca—the lattermost of whom we found transfixed in front of a video installation of John Lennon's naked (and quite hairy) butt in motion on a rotating spool. "Utterly fascinating" was her verdict.
Other guests at the annual party included Arizona Muse, Kristen McMenamy, Astrid Muñoz, Sophie Dahl, and Erin O'Connor, who was dressed in a feathery frock by the party's sponsor, Leon Max. (O'Connor is also fronting the Leon Max Fall 2012 ad campaign.) All the beautiful young things meant that it was a gatecrasher's dream, but they were made short work of by security guards who tossed them out with alarming efficiency. "Hmmm, I hope I'm not next," said the baby-faced billionaire Max. Somehow we think he was safe.
Also on hand to witness the likes of Cara Delevingne, Josephine de la Baume, Edie Campbell, and Suki Waterhouse going mental in the mosh pit when Azealia Banks performed were American ambassador Louis Susman and his wife Marjorie. "Well, this is quite the party," His Excellency said, which, in our opinion, neatly summed things up.
