Takashi Murakami in a Plushie Costume and More Pics From Miami Basel
And they say hedonism is dead. Despite the stock market's continued plunge and what gallerists and collectors alike are saying is a dismal market, there was plenty of merrymaking at Design Miami's opening-night party on Tuesday—an unofficial kickoff of sorts to Art Basel Miami Beach. The Penthouse at André Balazs' Raleigh hotel—he co-hosted with Ambra Medda and The New York Times' Stefano Tonchi—was filled to bursting with artists and art lovers. Taking up what seemed like half the space was Takashi Murakami: In a plushie costume of his own design that added several feet to his hips, the artist cuddled up to the likes of Calvin Klein, Pharrell Williams, and Naomi Campbell. (No word on whether the piece is up for sale.) Earlier in the evening, many of the same faces joined fashion types like Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah and Maria Buccellati to toast Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni and her new Design District boutique.
