L.A. insiders toast Kevin West's new book, Saving the Season
Tuesday night in Los Angeles, Band of Outsiders founder Scott Sternberg and Bon Appétit editor in chief Adam Rapoport joined forces to celebrate the launch of writer Kevin West's new book, Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving. "I approach preserving as a reporter," West said of his budding pastime, precipitated by an overzealous trip to the Santa Monica Farmers' Market. "I like to cook, but I'm not a chef. The way that I learned how to do this was reporting on the subject."
Guests—which included Liz Goldwyn, China Chow, and Zoe Cassavetes—turned out at downtown L.A.'s recently renovated Grand Central Market for a supper that incorporated Texas-style fixings from the new Horse Thief BBQ. "The whole pickling, canning, preserving thing is officially a thing," Rapoport said of the book's subject. "It's in step with everything else you've seen in the food world recently, where everything is harkening back to this artisanal movement."
Confessing he wasn't actually a foodie, Sternberg said his longtime friendship with West was what precipitated the evening's pairing. "L.A. does something to you. It changes your perspective, and you're able to look at these worlds, like fashion and food, that might be so esoteric otherwise, in a very free way." As for his much-hyped cookie blog, Sternberg admitted, "Cookie blog is on hiatus, but cookie consumption has not been." Stay tuned for a comeback? "Maybe 2014."
