Co Premieres Its New Short Film for Rooney Mara, Marisa Tomei, and More
For the launch of their third collection, Co partners Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern enlisted contemporary Greek artist and longtime fixture in the fashion world Konstantin Kakanias to create a cheeky animated tale bringing his longtime alter ego Mrs. Tependris to life. Tependris Rising (watch the video here) follows eccentric style icon Mrs. Tependris as she forges a fashion comeback on a Co runway with cartoon versions of Carine Roitfeld, Anna Wintour, and Olivier Zahm looking on.
"I fell in love with great fashion through character," Danan explained, providing a background to the narrative shorts Co releases each season. A previous video starred Élodie Bouchez, who was in the crowd alongside Rooney Mara and Dita Von Teese at the screening at L.A.'s Soho House last night. "When a great woman comes to life, you want to dress like her," Danan continued. "It's so important to first show the personality of the character of a woman and then put the clothes on her to bring her to life." And that's where Kakanias' illustrations came in. "It's amusing," he said modestly of the final seven-minute product. "The animation is old-fashioned, so it's not 'right now,' but it's very charming."
For Marisa Tomei, a Co customer, the use of film to convey a story proved familiar. "They're very collaborative people and they're really creative. They like playing with other creative people and that's where it all crosses over," she said. Indeed, Danan and Kern enlisted the efforts of friends like Tatiana von Furstenberg, who voiced Pearl, Mrs. Tependris' ever faithful secretary. "They're not in a singular mind-set," Tomei said, "and they can pull from other mediums."
