Los Angeles is a more diverse city than its critics would claim—or than repeat viewings of Entourage might suggest. It's the type of place, in fact, where on a single block you can find a television studio, a clutch of skate shops, a kosher butcher, and a boutique hotel. Last night's fête celebrating the reopening of Burberry's Beverly Hills flagship took that "little bit of everything" quality to heart. Mojitos and Yorkshire pudding? Sure. Doo-wop and smoked salmon-topped latkes? Bring both on, please. Kate Hudson, posing by a display of women's trenchcoats and a guy serving french fries? Not so strange, really.

Adding to the evening's pleasantly scrambled character was the fact that some of the guests had flown in for the party and were battling jet lag. "I've got a ringing in my head," confessed Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey, who had arrived from London late the previous evening. "I think it's good, though," the host added, in between greeting Mario Testino, Anna Friel, and Liv Tyler with a shocking lack of British reserve. "I think the jet lag is working for me tonight."

As for the doo-wop? That came from an unlikely source: Actor/heartthrob Ryan Gosling was deejaying the event, with some assistance. "I'm a total amateur," he confessed. "I just try to keep my hands busy. You know what they say about idle hands." Gosling tended his mitts to some vinyl and went on to explain that he'd grown up listening to doo-wop bands like the Shangri-Las and the Dixie Cups. "They said I could pretty much play what I like," he said. "And you never hear this stuff when you're out, so I figured I'd play doo-wop. It wasn't like I thought, oh yeah—doo-wop and Burberry, that's a natural." Hey, in this city, anything goes.
