Gucci's association with Hollywood goes back decades, so it was fitting that, for the L.A. leg of its 85th birthday celebrations, the label underscored its commitment to film. On Wednesday, company execs, along with Gena Rowlands and Sydney Pollack, hosted a party to celebrate the restoration of the 1974 John Cassavetes classic A Woman Under the Influence. In the crowd were movie buffs Kyle MacLachlan, China Chow, and Camilla Belle. "I've seen the film hundreds of times," said Chloë Sevigny
during cocktail hour on the Hotel Bel-Air's candlelit front lawn. "The first time I ever came to Los Angeles, I met Gena and had my photo taken with her. In the picture, there's a huge halo around her head, which is so telling." With the Cassavetes flick out of commission while the Film Foundation restores it to its full glory, guests caught a sneak preview of a different Hollywood offering. Zooey Deschanel, who will play Janis Joplin in the upcoming biopic, flexed her vocal chords with a trio of songs.
Back in New York, Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig were fêted with an intimate dinner at BG. Co-host Sienna Miller chose a top from the Spring show for the occasion, and taking cues from her screen character Edie Sedgwick, carried it off as a dress. The actress, who went to modeling school with Chapman and bunked with her on a trip to Sweden some years ago, paired the short frock with giant diamond and emerald drop earrings from Cartier. "I'm wearing a house!" she joked, referring to the expensive baubles. As Chapman's paramour, Harvey Weinstein, sauntered from table to table greeting guests and Craig's 19-year-old brother, Alex Warda fledgling magicianentertained Sophie Dahl with card tricks, Anne Hathaway talked about the decadent red number she selected: "I did the hair and the makeup and thought, 'Okay, my inspiration is Penélope Cruz inBlow.' "
The previous evening, editors and social types like Jennifer Creel and Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos gathered at Buddakan to meet Celine's Ivana Omazic. The Croatian designer has a reputation for shyness, but her tablemates quickly learned otherwise as she regaled them with tales of skydiving. Omazic met her Italian beau jumping out of a plane, she explained, adding that the four jumps she's made weren't half as scary as making him their first pasta dinner. Flying was one of the evening's recurring themes. Omazic was in town for less than 48 hours. "That doesn't leave much time for jet lag," she said.
