Daniel Craig Mouths Off at a Defiance Screening
It was no Golden Globes, but last night's Cinema Society screening of Defiance—Edward Zwick's real-life tale of World War II Jewish resistance fighters in the woods of Belarus—showcased some big-time filmmaking and drew its own star-studded crowd. It was also a family affair: 37 relatives of the Bielski brothers (the guerrilla leaders played by Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell in the film) joined the likes of Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Naomi Watts, and Agyness Deyn for the Nextbook-sponsored screening and the after-party at the Thompson LES hotel.
Champagne glasses in hand, cast members described how the Lithuanian shoot brought not only authenticity to the production but its own set of challenges as well. "If you're on one of those strange non-carb diets you can forget about it," Schreiber advised, remembering the local cuisine. His co-star Alexa Davalos had to wrestle snarling dogs and keep her focus amid swirls of fake snow. "It feels almost like dust, like little pieces of paper," she explained. "So inhaling it is an issue, breathing generally is an issue, eyelashes. I prefer the real thing." Craig (looking bronzed from a recent Caribbean holiday) said he was happy to pretend—when it comes to firearms, at least. "No desire to keep weapons in my house or anywhere else," insisted the blue-eyed 007. "I'm an actor, that's it. Bullshit, that's what I do." Point taken, even if he has millions of fans who would beg to differ.
