Gilt Groupe Celebrates Its First Birthday
Isabel Toledo and her husband, Ruben, made a surprise appearance at Thursday night's first anniversary party for Gilt Groupe, the Web site that specializes in high-fashion finds at affordable prices. Toledo, of course, became a part of history when she dressed the First Lady on Inauguration Day, but believe it or not, Michelle-and-Barack talk was slim at Shang, the new restaurant in the Thompson LES Hotel. Hostesses Nina Garcia, Marjorie Gubelmann, Samantha Boardman Rosen, and Alex Kramer and their Upper East Side pals talked shop (i.e., shopping) instead. Touting the site, where his clothes will go on sale this week, Peter Som said, "It's cheap and discreet, so you don't have to actually show up at the sample sale." That doesn't mean you don't have to be fast on your feet. "You gotta be quick," said Gubelmann. "I found an Oscar de la Renta dress for $600 and had to pounce on it!" Susan Posen, filling in for her son, Zac, who was home with the flu, predicted a lot of pouncing. Recession or not, she said, "we all have to get dressed."
