Designers and Models Aplenty at the Asia Society's Annual Gala
"Did you see those girls?" said one male guest at the Asia Society benefit gala last night. "They're absolutely stunning." He wasn't the only one who took notice when Liu Wen and Shu Pei walked into the Plaza on the arms of Phillip Lim and Richard Chai. As the foursome made their grand entrance, they ran into Anna Sui, who had Jessica Stam (complete with a new brunette 'do) by her side. The model-designer pairs were no coincidence—all of the designers attending the benefit had been asked to bring their muses as their plus-ones, and it made for a very pretty evening.
Dinner was announced with a loud gong and concluded with a surprise performance by a Chinese dragon. Bibhu Mohapatra, Tommy Ton, and Pat Cleveland were among those admiring the custom-designed table centerpieces. No expense was spared on the decor. Pointing to a table tented with red Chinese lanterns, its designer, Douglas Little, said, "I was really hoping that people would have dinner, smoke opium, and have sex in there—I think only the dinner part of that equation is going to actually happen, unfortunately."
Even before the auction began, the gala had raised $850,000 for the Asia Society.
