Polo Fans Head to Liberty State Park for the Veuve Clicquot Classic
When it looked like Champagne wasn't the only thing that would be raining at the fifth annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, Argentine horseman and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras wasn't too happy: "I was really worried last night," he said before the match on Saturday at Liberty State Park. Gazing up at the blue sky and the New York skyline, he added, "But I'm a really lucky guy. We have this new venue now and the views here are just spectacular."
Whether it was for ogling Figueras or each other's dresses, Manhattanites by the ferryload turned out, along with Hollywood imports in the form of Zoe Saldana and Minka Kelly. For host Clive Owen, it was the horses that drew him away from his busy filming schedule (he's currently making Blood Ties with Mila Kunis). "I'm very into horse racing; I go quite a bit in England and in the States quite a lot, too," he said. "I'm hoping to get to the Belmont Stakes next weekend if I don't have to work—I've been working very hard, not a lot of time off."
"Preppy on acid" was how Genevieve Jones described the scene, but psychotropics had nothing to do with it. By the time Rachel Zoe threw the honorary ball and the match was under way, nearly three hours after spectators had deboarded the first ferry, the bubbly had gotten to some heads. "What's a divot and how do we stomp it?" asked one man as he made his way to the field at the halfway point of the game. "I don't know," said his friend, "but as long as we can do it while we drink, I'll do it."
