Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig Shoot to Thrill, While the Yurmans Celebrate Summer
Asked why his family's company, David Yurman, was throwing a rooftop party, Evan Yurman didn't offer any grand strategic motives. "Summer," he shrugged. Atop the jeweler's downtown offices, pieces from recent collections lay encased on hunks of quartz and guests nibbled on lobster rolls beneath a blow-up of Arizona Muse, a star of the brand's fall campaign. As far as promos go, though, the soirée was definitely a soft sell—not to mention a reminder of the benefits of having an HQ outside of New York's less-scenic jewelry district. "If we were in midtown, we would not be doing this," Yurman the younger explained, nodding toward the grill he sometimes fires up during lunchtime. He and his parents, Yurman added, are "thinking about potentially opening a store downtown." Joan Smalls, who's also in the downtown-themed fall campaign, came up while it was still light out, and as the sun set over the Hudson, Coco Rocha had only one complaint: "I need my glasses!" (Yurman makes plenty; ask, Coco, and you shall receive.)
Later that night, nearby at the James hotel's rooftop bar, guests were squinting, too—angling for a better look at Daniel Craig. The 007 actor managed to keep a low profile at the after-party for The Whistleblower, a thriller about sex trafficking in Bosnia that stars his new bride, Rachel Weisz. Unflinching in its depiction of sexual abuse and based on actual events, the film isn't exactly an easy segue to a cocktail party. But that's sort of the point, Weisz (in red Valentino) explained at the screening, which was hosted by the Cinema Society, Dior Beauty, and DeLeón. "This is my favorite genre, although I'm not sure it's a genre," she said. "True stories about women who do extraordinary things." Olivier Theyskens was among those on hand for a sneak peek, as was Kathy Bolkovac, the crusading Nebraskan police officer who's played by Weisz in the film. What's that feel like? "Quite fabulous," Bolkovac admitted.
