Striking a Pose at Vogue Doc Premiere
The Fashion Set Turns Out in Force for The September Issue
The September Issue, R.J. Cutler's much anticipated new documentary about the making of the biggest installment in Vogue magazine's history, finally had its official premiere at New York's Museum of Modern Art last night—and the turnout was suitably stellar. Marc Jacobs, Sean Combs, Renée Zellweger, Donald Trump, and the issue's cover girl, Sienna Miller—along, of course, with Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and her cohorts (and now costars) like André Leon Talley and Grace Coddington—were just some of the boldfaced names who showed up for the sneak peek.
The reaction seemed to be universally positive. "It was so motivational, it made me want to go back to my studio and work," said Joseph Altuzarra. Added Peter Som: "You can't make this stuff up. I loved it." Cutler seemed equally pleased. Thanking Wintour in his introduction, he explained, "She had absolutely no reason to trust a filmmaker she hadn't met before, but she took a leap of faith and supported me throughout the process." Afterward, he told us, "It was a great audience. They got all the jokes, which made me happy." Talley probably got the film's biggest laughs when he showed up for a tennis lesson with a monogrammed Louis Vuitton towel draped around his neck and three LV cases. So will Cutler miss the fashion world? "I'm wearing a John Varvatos suit, which I wouldn't have before," he said. We'll take that as a yes.
