Laird Hamilton traded Kauai for Long Island this weekend, where he teamed up with Chanel for a dinner at the Crow's Nest in Montauk that drew the likes of Richard Gere, Anjelica Huston, Rachel Weisz, and Julian Schnabel. The king of big-wave surfing is the new ambassador for the brand's J12 Marine watch. Designed for deep diving and other sorts of National Geographic-appropriate adventures, the timepiece is just as often spotted on the wrists of those who prefer wet martinis to wet suits, but Hamilton assured us he had put it fully to the test. "They gave it to me for six months and I just banged it up as best I could," he told us. "After the time was up, I was like, hey, it still works."

Hanging ten, naturally, was the hot topic of the evening. "I surf," Rogan Gregory said, "but you know, there wasn't much out here for the last couple of days. The water has been completely flat." Bruce Weber, for his part, reported, "I've photographed Laird since he was a kid. But actually going surfing? Well, there are limits to how much I get involved." If Susan Casey is right, amateurs might be better off on the beach, anyway. Her new book The Wave, which was given to every guest, tracks the rise of erratic killer waves. Hamilton, of course, is nothing if not a pro. Eyeing the Chanel logo surfboards on display, he mused, "I could see myself tweaking the design on these a bit." A Hamilton-for-Chanel collaboration? You never know.
