Joseph Altuzarra, Tabitha Simmons, and More Join the CFDA Club
The club just got bigger: The Council of Fashion Designers of America formally added 26 members to its ranks last night and showed off its recently opened Bleecker Street headquarters in the process.
No need to borrow the apartment of an Elie Tahari or Donna Karan this time around: The CFDA's space isn't just new and improved, it's also twice the size of the old one in the Garment District, and those gathered wasted no time baptizing it. "We had the bar open before the meeting," CEO Steven Kolb admitted. Tommy Hilfiger, Jenna Lyons, and jewelry designers Mimi So and Kara Ross were ratified as new board directors. "We talked about Starbucks," Ruffian's Brian Wolk reported. Rodarte's holiday season partnership with the coffee giant hits soon—so who's up next? "That hasn't been finalized yet," Kolb said.
New inductees such as Tabitha Simmons, Lisa Perry, and Emily Current and Meritt Elliott of the eponymous L.A.-based denim brand donned name tags and did some fraternal mingling with the likes of Zac Posen and Francisco Costa. "It's a hard industry, that's the reality," offered Peter Som. "The pace, the pressure, who else but fellow designers can understand what you're going through when your head's spinning around and your eyes are twirling in two different directions?"
Yvan Mispelaere said he'd been spending more time in Paris since his recent departure as creative director at Diane von Furstenberg but didn't offer details. Of all the freshmen, Joseph Altuzarra is perhaps the least likely to need to borrow meeting space at the new headquarters. Still, he seemed comforted the place was walking distance from his Soho studio. "If I had a fashion emergency, it would be very easy for me to come."
