The Suite Life
A Glam House Party To Celebrate Versace's New Soho Boutique
No one throws fashion parties like Donatella Versace anymore. It hit you the moment her door to the Waldorf Towers' Royal Suite, once home to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, was pulled open last night. There, in one corner were Linda Evangelista and Stella Tennant holding court, in another their supermodel heirs Kasia Struss, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Ginta Lapina, and in the center of it all, Sting and Trudie still clutching at each other after all these years. In a far room Lady Gaga was so dressed down and casual that Ellen von Unwerth, who's shot the superstar on more than one occasion, didn't recognize her. "Ellen," she said, "it's me, Gaga." Grimes performed a surprise set not long after ten.
The cause of all the revelry was 50 blocks downtown: Versace's new Soho store opened yesterday and Donatella's collaborator Christopher Kane, in particular, was excited about it. "There's cake at every doorstep, he said of neighbors current, like Prada and Marc Jacobs, and neighbors soon to open, including Balenciaga and Saint Laurent. "You can jump, jump, jump, and it's just one little street." "I love Soho," Versace confirmed. But would she be giving up the Waldorf Towers for the Mercer Hotel? Not likely. The rooms there aren't big enough for her kind of parties.
