V Is for Valentino and Vivier
A Pair of Store Parties on Madison Avenue
If two fêtes are better than one, then the Upper East Side had the setup just right. Tuesday evening kicked off early with a 5 p.m. book signing for Hal Rubenstein's new hardcover 100 Unforgettable Dresses at Valentino's Madison Avenue boutique. A few of the store mannequins were dressed from the archives. "That's Mr. Valentino's very first red dress," Rubenstein said, as he pointed out a cocktail number with chiffon rosettes on the skirt. It made the cut for the publication. "Picking the dresses wasn't hard at all," the InStyle editor added. "They were from iconic moments or dresses that made an impression on our time."
Speaking of passing moments, a couple hours later and directly across Madison Avenue, Roger Vivier was celebrating its new Rendez-Vous limited-edition collection inspired by Keith Richards (read: gold chain mail and vulture feathers on black suede). "I don't play any instruments myself," Bruno Frisoni admitted. "Well, I played the drums when I was young, but I was more of a noisemaker." The Vivier designer made up for it in other ways, including reading Richards' autobiography Life. And if that didn't stick to theme, then there was Keith's daughter Alexandra Richards on the DJ tables.
