Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Win Friends and Influence People at Barneys
Celebrities generally don't find it hard to focus on themselves, so you might expect the first book from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to be all about, well, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. In fact, Influence, as its title suggests, is mostly about other people: Karl Lagerfeld, Lauren Hutton, John Galliano, Diane von Furstenberg, Peter Beard, Robert Lee Morris, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, among them. "We felt really strongly not to do something on ourselves," explained Ashley, with sister Mary-Kate nearby, at the tome's Monday night launch fête at Barneys. "Instead it was about reaching out to people in the fashion and art communities."
While the Proenza Schouler boys were the only subjects in attendance at the cocktail party, the twins had plenty of supporters from the fashion world on hand, including Thakoon Panichgul, Robin Givhan, and Style.com contributor Derek Blasberg—who wrote the foreword to the book and gave the girls interviewing tips. "And I did the Influence windows downstairs!" interjected Simon Doonan, who had his own idols on his mind. "I have so many I could be here all night! We're talking about everybody from Liberace to Diana Vreeland to Bruce Weber." As for Ashley, she had one interview that stuck out from the others. "Bob Colacello was amazing," she said. "He has a completely different perspective on what glamour is."
