Awards Points
Christian Louboutin, Philip Treacy, and More ACE It
"I have a confession—I love, love, love jewelry," admitted Cynthia Nixon at last night's 15th annual ACE Awards, where the Accessories Council honored some of fashion's most influential people. "I think I'm not the only one in this room."
That was for sure. Nixon, who presented Temple St. Clair with the organization's Hall of Fame Award, was in good company, with design legends like Christian Louboutin and Philip Treacy taking home prizes alongside the likes of Nicole Richie and Marchesa's Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman. Diane von Furstenberg, who gave Frank Fialkoff of Haskell Jewels his Business Visionary Award nod, took the liberty of defining the evening's subject matter: "When people ask me what I think accessories are, I usually tell them they're like punctuation in a sentence."
The award winners, for their part, went on to explain how accessories have punctuated their lives. Richie, who was named Influencer of the Year, told Style.com that sunglasses are her favorite extra. "I started wearing them because I don't wear makeup, and the more of your face you can cover, the better." As for Rebecca Minkoff, her handbag business was a life-changer. "It was only six years ago today that I was thinking about giving up the fashion industry and becoming a bartender," she said, accepting her Breakthrough Award. "I thought, 'They make great money, I should do it.'" Not quite as good as accessory designers; Minkoff has plans to open her first store in Tokyo next spring.
