Designers Talk Bags, Shoes, and Presidential Bids at American Fashion Accessories Launch
A who's who of New York designers, including Narciso Rodriguez, Zac Posen, Francisco Costa, and Doo-Ri Chung, crowded into Bergdorf Goodman's café, BG, on Wednesday night to toast American Fashion Accessories, a new tome commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and edited by Style.com's Candy Pratts Price.
As guests paged through the book, talk naturally turned to accessories, and there were as many favorites as there were people in the candlelit room. Robert Lee Morris said his were the knuckle rings that he designed, or maybe the post-apocalyptic Mad Max collection he made, "before Mad Max, mind you," in 1976. Tory Burch mentioned a Native American turquoise necklace and a pair of Byzantine vermeil cuffs that belonged to her grandmother. "In this economy, costume jewelry is going to be really important," she said.
For Pratts Price herself, it's always been about the shoes: "A shoe is a support system in more ways than one. It tells a lot about you—where you're going, where you've been." Shoes are close to Kenneth Cole's heart, as well. "If you can figure out that business, you can do anything," said the designer, who was en route to a book launch of his own for Awearness: Inspiring Stories About How to Make a Difference. "Maybe even run for president." 2016, we presume, Kenneth?
