"Playing a drunk is actually really hard," Charlize Theron said Friday night before the Cinema Society and Dior Beauty's New York debut of Young Adult. In her first film in three years, the actress stars as a binge-drinking young adult author who makes an awkward return to her hometown to find an old flame. "I find it hard to do it in a way that's believable," she added. "Actually, I don't like playing drunk."

Of Theron's character, writer Diablo Cody said she didn't have to look far for inspiration. "I thought to myself, well, I've been writing about my teen years for the past few years of my life. Maybe I'm like a stunted person and maybe I'd like to write about a woman who is unable to move past those years."

Theron, according to her co-stars, steadfastly stuck to her mean, self-absorbed former prom queen character throughout the course of filming. "Charlize is such a killer in this movie. She is scary—she definitely scared me a little bit," said Elizabeth Reaser. "It was funny; she tried to talk to the actor that plays my baby in the movie and it just started crying every time she would go near it, even when we weren't filming, because she had this crazy energy." Patton Oswalt felt like crying at times, too. "Well, the most difficult thing to do was the love scene because I'm half-naked next to the hottest woman on the planet," he said. "I thought, 'There's no way I could do this next to Michael Moore or something?' Great."
