A Can-Do Spirit

The Food Bank Honors Its Star Volunteers

The Food Bank for New York City held its fifth annual Can-Do Awards dinner and auction on Monday night at Chelsea Piers. This year's honorees included Helena Christensen, MTV Networks' Judy McGrath, and Gywneth Paltrow. After an adulatory introduction by Mario Batali, in which he declared Paltrow "the goddess of truth and light," the actress took the stage. "I'm kind of drunk because I've been here since six o'clock," she giggled. Nevertheless, the "goddess" milked $75,000 from the audience—which she then matched—for the worthy cause. The evening's real star, however, was funnyman Stephen Colbert, who introduced McGrath. "I love you, Stephen!" shouted a guest as Colbert mounted the podium. "I love me, too," the comedian deadpanned. "But tonight is about loving the Food Bank."
