The International Center of Photography's Awards Gala
Every May, the world's top shutterbugs leave the darkroom for the spotlight at the International Center of Photography's Infinity Awards. Some relish the chance to be on the other side of the camera, while others don't. "Public speaking is my greatest fear," admitted Taryn Simon at Monday night's ceremony, facing an audience of 800 that included Kelly Klein and Diane Keaton. Fashion darling Craig McDean had apparently supped on a slice of humble pie before ascending the podium. "I'm not trying to reinvent anything," he demurred. "I'm just looking for different ways to say things." Lensmen like Mario Sorrenti and Jay Maisel spent the evening orchestrating photo ops with friends. Gilles Bensimon, meanwhile, fashioned sinister paper masks out of his seatmates' name cards. Were they demons? Tribal gods? Replied Bensimon with a crooked grin: "They are whatever you want them to be."
