McQueen for a Day

The Brit Designer Lands on the West Coast With a Bang

Perhaps it was written in the stars that bad-girl rocker Beth Ditto would perform at the opening of Alexander McQueen's L.A. outpost. "He's a radical person, and he's also a Pisces," she said, explaining her kinship with the designer. McQueen was quick to return the compliment. "I made her a special dress and she looks fierce," he said, referencing her butterfly-print caftan. After Ditto and her band the Gossip had finished playing, guests like Janet Jackson, Eve, and Anthony Kiedis turned their attention upward to the store's pièce de résistance: a nine-foot male nude by sculptor Robert Bryce Muir that hangs from a skylight in the foyer. No word on the anatomically correct fellow's star sign.
